Larnaca is a coastal city in southeastern Cyprus, built around a broad bay on the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the island's main urban centers and combines a long waterfront, sandy beaches, historic neighborhoods, and archaeological sites. The palm-lined Finikoudes promenade runs beside the central beach and continues toward the old harbor and medieval castle. Larnaca's position also places it close to the salt lake on the city's southern edge, where seasonal wetlands attract large numbers of birds. The city provides a useful base for exploring nearby villages, beaches, churches, and archaeological sites across the Larnaca district.

Larnaca's cultural identity is linked to the ancient city of Kition, early Christianity, and its long maritime history. The Church of Saint Lazarus is one of the city's principal religious landmarks and is traditionally associated with Lazarus of Bethany, who is believed to have lived in Kition after his resurrection. The Hala Sultan Tekke, located beside the Larnaca Salt Lake, is an important Muslim pilgrimage site and one of the island's notable religious monuments. Larnaca also retains traditional Cypriot customs through local festivals, religious celebrations, craft traditions, and neighborhood markets.

The Church of Saint Lazarus stands in the old center and is known for its stone construction and carved iconostasis. Larnaca Castle occupies the southern end of the Finikoudes area and houses a small medieval museum. Nearby, the Kamares Aqueduct is a prominent historic structure built to carry water toward the city. Larnaca Salt Lake forms an important wetland habitat outside the urban center, particularly known for flamingos and other migratory birds during the cooler months. The nearby Hala Sultan Tekke stands among palm trees beside the lake, while Mackenzie Beach provides another popular stretch of coast south of the city.

Food in Larnaca reflects the wider culinary traditions of Cyprus, with olive oil, vegetables, grains, seafood, meat, and local cheeses forming the basis of many dishes. Cypriot meze can include grilled meats, fresh fish, halloumi, olives, dips, salads, and seasonal vegetables, while sweets such as loukoumades and baklava are common in cafés and bakeries. Fresh seafood is particularly associated with the city's coastal setting. Larnaca also has a strong coffeehouse tradition, with traditional Cypriot coffee served in small cups. The combination of salt-lake wetlands, historic religious sites, and a central Mediterranean waterfront gives the city a distinctive landscape.
