Paphos is a coastal city in southwestern Cyprus, combining a working harbor, Mediterranean beaches, historic neighborhoods, and one of the island's most important archaeological landscapes. The city is closely associated with Aphrodite, the ancient Greek goddess whose cult was centered in the Paphos region. Kato Paphos, the lower part of the city around the harbor, contains an extensive archaeological park that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property. The modern city extends inland toward the older Ktima district, while the surrounding region includes vineyards, villages, rocky coastlines, and the forests of western Cyprus.

Paphos has a cultural identity strongly shaped by its ancient religious heritage and maritime position. The Archaeological Park contains remains of ancient villas, public buildings, theatres, and fortifications, with elaborate mosaics depicting scenes from Greek mythology. The city's Medieval Castle stands beside the harbor and reflects its later role as a fortified coastal settlement. Religious heritage is also visible in sites such as the Agia Kyriaki Chrysopolitissa Church and the nearby remains of an early Christian basilica. The wider region includes the Sanctuary of Aphrodite at nearby Kouklia, linking modern Paphos with one of Cyprus's most important ancient cult centers.

The Kato Paphos Archaeological Park is the city's principal heritage attraction, with the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus, Aion, and Orpheus containing intricate Roman-period mosaic floors. The Tombs of the Kings, a short distance north of the harbor, consist of monumental underground burial chambers carved from solid rock; despite their name, they were used for high-ranking officials and aristocrats rather than kings. Along the coast, Petra tou Romiou, also called Aphrodite's Rock, is associated with the traditional story of Aphrodite emerging from the sea. Farther north, the Akamas Peninsula provides protected landscapes, trails, gorges, and coastal habitats.

Food in Paphos reflects the broader cuisine of Cyprus, combining Mediterranean ingredients with Greek and Middle Eastern influences. Meze is commonly served as a succession of small dishes that can include grilled meats, fresh fish, halloumi, olives, salads, dips, and seasonal vegetables. Local specialties also include sheftalia, souvlaki, koupepia, and breads and pastries made with regional ingredients. The Paphos area is part of Cyprus's wine-producing landscape, with vineyards extending into the foothills and mountain villages inland. The city's harbor and waterfront provide a setting where seafood, traditional Cypriot dishes, and local wines are closely connected with the region's coastal and agricultural character.
