Kairouan is a historic city in central Tunisia, set on a broad plain away from the Mediterranean coast. It is one of the principal holy cities of the Islamic world and is recognized for its exceptionally preserved medina, religious monuments, and traditional urban design. The city’s whitewashed buildings, domes, narrow lanes, and surrounding walls create a distinctive landscape. Kairouan is also closely associated with textile production and agriculture, particularly the making of hand-knotted carpets. Its cultural importance is reflected in the UNESCO-listed historic ensemble, which includes the medina, Aghlabid Basins, and Zawiya of Sidi Sahib.

Kairouan has a strong religious and scholarly identity that has shaped local traditions and architecture. The Great Mosque is the city’s most important religious landmark and contains a large prayer hall supported by columns of marble and porphyry. The Zawiya of Sidi Sahib, also known as the Mosque of the Barber, is another important site, with courtyards decorated with colorful ceramic tiles. The medina preserves traditional courtyard houses and winding streets enclosed by historic walls. Local crafts are also significant, particularly carpet weaving, with workshops producing geometric designs using techniques passed through generations.

The Great Mosque dominates the historic center with its square minaret, expansive courtyard, and arcaded prayer hall. Nearby, the Mosque of the Three Gates is noted for its carved facade, while the Aghlabid Basins form an impressive historic water-storage complex outside the medina. The Zawiya of Sidi Sahib adds a different architectural style, with richly decorated interiors and courtyards. Within the old city, Bab el Khoukha, Bab ech Chouhada, and Bab et Tounes provide access through the fortified walls. The Barrouta well, with its traditional water-drawing mechanism, is another distinctive feature of the medina.

Kairouan is also known for several foods associated with its local culinary tradition. Makroudh, a pastry made with semolina and filled with dates before being fried or baked and coated with syrup, is one of the city's best-known specialties. Couscous, brik, harissa, olive oil, and other Tunisian staples are also common in local cooking. The city's carpet workshops remain an important part of its cultural identity, with large hand-knotted carpets often featuring detailed geometric patterns. Kairouan's combination of religious monuments, traditional crafts, distinctive food, and a preserved medina gives the city a particularly strong connection between everyday life and cultural heritage.
