Kyrenia is a coastal city on the northern shore of Cyprus, set between the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the Kyrenia mountain range. Its historic harbor, waterfront promenade, and distinctive medieval castle form the center of the city, while the surrounding coastline includes beaches, rocky coves, and small fishing areas. The old harbor is enclosed by stone buildings and traditional boats, giving the waterfront a distinctive character. Kyrenia is also close to several important mountain and heritage sites, including Bellapais Abbey and St. Hilarion Castle, which overlook the northern coast.

Kyrenia's cultural identity is closely connected with its maritime history and the many civilizations that shaped northern Cyprus. Kyrenia Castle stands beside the old harbor and contains archaeological displays, including the remains of an ancient ship discovered off the coast. The castle's architecture reflects the city's long military importance and changing rulers. Nearby Bellapais Abbey is a major Gothic monument set in the foothills above the city, while the old harbor retains traditional waterfront architecture. Local culture also includes fishing, Cypriot cuisine, handicrafts, and religious traditions found in villages across the surrounding district.

Kyrenia Castle is the city's principal historic landmark, occupying a strong position at the eastern side of the old harbor. The castle walls enclose courtyards, towers, chambers, and the Shipwreck Museum. Above the city, St. Hilarion Castle occupies a rocky mountain ridge with extensive views across the coast and surrounding plains. Bellapais Abbey, located in the nearby village of Bellapais, contains Gothic arches, cloisters, and a church set against the Kyrenia range. Along the coast, beaches and coves provide opportunities for swimming and boating, while the mountains offer walking routes and panoramic viewpoints.

Food in Kyrenia reflects the wider culinary traditions of Cyprus, combining Mediterranean ingredients with influences from the island's diverse history. Meze is commonly served as a succession of small dishes that can include grilled meats, fish, olives, salads, dips, vegetables, and halloumi cheese. Fresh seafood is particularly associated with the city's harbor setting, while local dishes may also feature lamb, chicken, bulgur, potatoes, and seasonal produce. Cypriot sweets and pastries are widely available in cafés and bakeries. The old harbor remains an important setting for dining, with restaurants occupying historic buildings around the waterfront.
