Ometepe is an island in southwestern Nicaragua, located in Lake Nicaragua and formed by two volcanoes joined by a narrow isthmus. Concepción rises on the northern side of the island, while Maderas occupies the southern section. The island includes the municipalities of Moyogalpa and Altagracia and has a landscape of farms, forests, wetlands, beaches, and rural communities. Its position within Lake Nicaragua gives Ometepe a distinctive setting, while the fertile volcanic soils support agriculture. The island is also part of the Ometepe Island Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO for its ecological and cultural importance.

Ometepe has a long cultural connection with Indigenous communities, whose presence is represented by petroglyphs, ceramics, stone sculptures, and other archaeological remains found across the island. Petroglyphs are particularly numerous around the Maderas area and provide evidence of earlier societies and their religious traditions. Altagracia and Moyogalpa are the island's main population centers, with churches, plazas, markets, and community events reflecting local life. Agriculture, fishing, livestock, and small-scale commerce remain important to the island economy, while traditional crafts and local food continue to connect present-day communities with the region's cultural heritage.

The two volcanoes define Ometepe's landscape and provide some of its best-known natural attractions. Concepción is an active volcano with a steep symmetrical profile, while Maderas is covered by forest and contains a crater lagoon. The Istian wetlands between the volcanoes form an important habitat for birds and other wildlife, and the island's protected areas include the Volcán Maderas National Park and the Peña Inculta-Istian Wildlife Refuge. Beaches along Lake Nicaragua provide places for swimming and kayaking, while trails lead through forests, farms, and volcanic terrain. Wildlife includes monkeys, parrots, tropical birds, and other species associated with the island's varied ecosystems.

Ometepe's fertile volcanic soils support crops such as plantains, bananas, corn, beans, and other fruits and vegetables, while fishing remains part of life around Lake Nicaragua. Local meals commonly feature rice, beans, tortillas, plantains, fresh cheese, eggs, and fish. One of the island's most distinctive details is its collection of pre-Hispanic rock art, with petroglyphs carved into volcanic stone found in several locations. The combination of two volcanoes, freshwater beaches, agricultural communities, wetlands, and archaeological sites gives Ometepe a landscape in which natural and cultural features are closely connected.
