San Juan del Sur is a coastal town on Nicaragua's southwestern Pacific shore, set around a curved bay bordered by hills. Its waterfront combines a working fishing community with restaurants, small hotels, shops, and a broad sandy beach. The surrounding coastline includes forested headlands, rocky coves, and additional beaches reached by road or boat. A large statue of Christ of the Mercy stands on a hillside overlooking the bay and has become one of the town's most recognizable landmarks. San Juan del Sur also serves as a base for exploring the beaches and rural landscapes of Nicaragua's Rivas department.

San Juan del Sur has a maritime identity shaped by fishing and coastal trade, while tourism has become an important part of the local economy. The town's central waterfront and surrounding streets contain restaurants, markets, small businesses, and accommodations serving both residents and visitors. Fishing traditions remain visible at the beach and harbor, where boats operate in the surrounding Pacific waters. Local celebrations include religious festivities and community events, while Nicaraguan cultural traditions remain evident in music, food, and everyday life. The town's coastal setting has also created a strong connection with surfing and other ocean-based activities.

The bay provides a sheltered setting for swimming and boating, while nearby beaches offer different coastal environments. Playa Maderas, north of San Juan del Sur, is known for surfing and its rocky shoreline, while Playa Marsella provides another beach setting surrounded by hills. The Christ of the Mercy statue stands on a high point south of the town and offers views over the bay and Pacific coast. Further along the coastline, beaches such as Playa Hermosa and Playa El Coco provide quieter stretches of sand. The surrounding hills and tropical vegetation support birds and other wildlife typical of Nicaragua's Pacific region.

Seafood is central to San Juan del Sur's coastal cuisine, with fish, shrimp, lobster, and other marine products featured in restaurants around the waterfront. Traditional Nicaraguan foods such as gallo pinto, nacatamales, tortillas, beans, plantains, and fresh cheese are also common. The town's horseshoe-shaped bay is one of its defining geographic features, with steep hills rising on either side and the Pacific opening beyond the harbor. Its combination of fishing traditions, surf beaches, hillside viewpoints, and access to a varied coastline makes San Juan del Sur one of the better-known coastal communities in southwestern Nicaragua.
